New England
after seeing how much overseas flights have apparently skyrocketed for this summer, we're probably shelving the venice/mediterranean plan and are looking more at something domestic -- quite possibly new england. i've spent some time there but my wife has never been, and there are certain areas that would be new to both of us.
just wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations about towns or parks or activities or scenic drives not to be missed if one were to spend a week or two in that neck o' the woods.
at the moment, probably the top things on our list are acadia NP in maine, possibly cape cod, boston & environs (mostly for the historic stuff there), and perhaps newport RI. we figure to go thru vermont & new hampshire too, but i don't really have much of an idea about specifics in those states.
any thoughts?

edition,
You've already listed a lot of the best places. I HIGHLY recommend Acadia NP and Bar Harbor...I love it there!!! And have a lobster dinner while you're there...yum, yum! I also liked stopping and shopping (a little) at L.L. Bean. Your wife will love it, and you will too if your bank account survives the visit.
In New Hampshire, go to the top of Mount Washington. But be prepared for some of the strongest winds and coldest "summer" temps you have ever experienced. Seriously, take a heavy COAT along...you may need it! But the mountain is worth the drive, as is all of northern New Hampshire.
As for Vermont, I also prefer the northern portions of that state, especially Burlington...nice small city. But the entire state is beautiful....still has lots of covered bridges.
As for Mass., there is sooooo much history there. Lexington, Concord, Plymouth, Sturbridge, etc., etc., and Boston, of course. If you love Colonial and Rev. War history, you'll be in Heaven. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is a great hang-out place, though it can be a crime area if you're not smart. It's still very much worth seeing. And if you like baseball, Fenway Park is Mecca. But good luck on getting any tickets...sell outs are the norm. I also HIGHLY recommend Cape Cod and the Berkshire Mountains....on opposite ends of the state. Both are beautiful, although the Cape is better in the Summer (Berkshires in the Fall).
Rhode Island is okay, I guess. Newport has lots of big fancy "summer homes." But personally I'm not into the "lifestyles of the rich & famous." And I've not spent a lot of time in Conn. But I enjoyed walking on campus at Yale (and at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass). There really is lots of ivy there.
I could say a lot more about some places. If you have specific questions, fire away. Have fun, but take lots of money. And you had better make some reservations fast...some places are likely already full for the summer!

Lot to see and do in Boston and it's not far from Cape Cod or Nantucket. You could do a whale watching tour, see the Boston (New England) aquarium, go to one of the beaches, MFA Boston has some great Sargents, or catch the 4th of July at one of the historic venues--spent one fourth in Cape Cod. The wife and I tied the knot on the 2nd of July so every 4th, we're watching fireworks somewhere different and have that extra day of vaca. Augusta pretty much covers everything. Not much to see in RI--Providence, Brown or RISD, cool old houses, maybe beaches...

would that be the river walk? Since they've become more land locked, food courts were premier places for extended sightings in Dallas.

Eat lobster every night while in N E. Great taste that can't be duplicated elsewhere and great prices also.

My Wife and I have been kicking around the same Idea. Always nice to get away during the summer month where it is a little cooler.
Now if you do get to the Cape Cod area- my I suggest catching a Cape Cod Summer League Game- There will be a few of the Longhorn players playing summer ball up there after they get finish with business here in Texas.

Dang it-I got it right in one part then goof on the next one!! If you do go let me know and I give you the Teams that they are playing on. It is a wooden bat league and the Cape Cod is the premier Summer Collegiate Leagues in the country.
