If you really want a challenge?
Try Tres Ritos......about 40 or 50 miles from Taos......
and it will scare the hell out of you.

Have spent a lot of time in Red River, Taos, Sante Fe, Tres Ritos over the years.
Skied a bit....will say it is not my deal.
But I did truly enjoy taking a horse and a packhorse/packmule and riding into the backcountry for long periods of time and disappearing.....it is probably the best experiences and memories of my adult life.

Just as a sidebar....
Had a A-Frame 1800 SqFt Cabin at one time on the backside of Angel Fire outside of Mora that I wish I still had....Woke up in the morning looking at a snow capped peak and knew I was a in a place that was truly beautiful. A good fire....a strong cup of coffee and more peace and serenity than i had ever experienced before.....or since.

Went skiing in Breckenridge my freshman year for spring break. Didn't really do that much for me.

I'm with you Duke. It's fun but I hate standing in line when it's cold and some dumb ass keeps running into me. After a couple of runs I'm done.

This weekend I dropped the kids off at ski school in Winter Park went across the street and jumped on a big ass snowmobile for a couple of hours up on the continental divide. Much more enjoyable.

Quite the contrary. Everything seemed too easy at first. Was doing blue blacks by the middle of my second day. Then I tried a black and moguls and almost died. Add to that the facts that it's really expensive, you have to get up early on vacation, and you're surrounded by snow and cold, and that was the last time I ever needed to see a ski slope unless it's to sit in a hot tub. My friends were doing the bowls at the end of the week, and I thought they'd literally lost their mind.

Oh yeah, the standing in lines for the lift. It's just too many costs for the benefits.

Hiked Taos Ski Valley this summer. Went through Mora on our way home after skiing in Taos this Christmas.

I'll grant you that, on average, Colorado has better skiing than New Mexico - that's a given. But Taos skis just about as good as any place in CO.

This year, until about a month ago, the snow sucked in CO. Taos had more snow than any resort in CO (except the usual places like Wolf Creek, etc) over the Christmas break. So, it was an easy decision to ski Taos this year.

Agreed. I went snowboarding back in college & it was fun, but the entire process is expensive. Maybe if I lived near the mountains I'd pick it up again, but it's simply not worth the time/money for me.

One of the big reasons to ski Taos over Colorado is Michael's Kitchen.

The front range snow sucks this year. The SW part of the state has got some good stuff but it is sparse up here. There were still a lot of rocks, logs, and tree tops showing at the upper elevations when we were riding Sunday. A lot of bowls that you can usually ride still don't have enough cover.

I hiked at Taos before, too. The highest point in New Mexico is across the valley (Wheeler Peak), and I climbed it. The view from the top is amazing.

I've been skiing for over 25 years. For about the last 15 or so, I've been telling myself that I've got to try snowboarding. 90% of the people I've talked to who have tried both say that boarding is more fun. But I keep putting it off because I have to justify the new skis, the new boots, etc., etc.

I've never really had trouble with snowboarders. 98% of 'em are just doing their thing and having fun. There are just as many idiot skiers in my experience.

There has been only one occasion when I've had an issue with a boarder. I was at Heavenly and a boarder (teenager) came flying down a fairly narrow run. He nearly ran into me and then caused a girl who was skiing in front of me to wipe out. I caught up to him farther down the run, had some choice words for him, poked him in the chest with one of my poles, and told him to slow his ass down or I'd shove the pole in another part of his body. His eyes got big and he didn't say a word. Other than that, I've never had an issue with a snowboarder.
