Right now i am running in Brooks Defyance, a wide cushioned shoe to carry my lard ass around.

Get with a training program if you haven't run distances before, it is fun and the leader can help you with good form and scheduling.

My wife and I train for Houston and Austin every year. We are runnig 3 miles, 3-4 times a week now but will start ramping up in July. We have a good group that raises money for a local charitable organization so it gives us a focal point to train for. Running in July - Sept you need all the motivation you can get!
I appreciate the recommendation, scout. I really like the idea of joining a training program for the motivation and the charitable aspect. One question, do you buy your initial pair from Fleet Feet and then do the online thing or do you just get fitted and go straight online? I only ask because I want to know if I should go in there planning on dropping some cash, which I'm willing to do, or if they'd be fine with fitting me and then me not buying anything.

Speaking for myself, I buy the 1st pair at the store. They're giving you their expertise, the least I can do is throw them a bone for the help.

That's what I planned on doing and I assume that's what scout was saying he does. Thanks, BWG. I'd rather pay more for a great service than go to the mall stores and get some person who doesn't have a clue.

Absolutely agree with BWG, need to support the guys helping you out, but after that I buy off the net. Shoes are like cars, they change the models every year but you can continue buying out of stock for a long time. For me anyway finding a comfortable shoe isn't easy. I have gone from Asics to New Balance and now to Brooks when the model I liked finally sold out and their current model didn't feel good. I have wide feet and had a nerve issue in my foot (from wearing too narrow a shoe) so I am really particular.

Don't be a slave to the shoe industry. Just buy some minimalist sneakers and start running.

This dude ran from Paris to Moscow before Nike.

Whoa, that guy is a f*cking badass. Ran 100 miles in 19 hours and he never even ran a marathon?! I guess the SEALs keep you in pretty good shape. I wonder what kind of shoes this guy wears.

That's the least of it. Get this: the guy's been doing this sh*t with a hole in his heart & nobody(including him) knew until about a year ago. Just wait until he's fully back from that surgery.

I currently lift weights about 5 days a week and do cardio as much as I can (usually about 3 days a week). As far as supplements go, I take Dymatize Elite Whey protein in the middle of the day and after my workout. I also take Optimum Casein protein right before I go to bed to preserve muscle. For pre workout, I take Monster Pump, which is actually pretty good although I'm always looking for something better (let me know if you have any suggestions - the only other pre workout product I've tried before is NO Xplode). I cycle on Kre-Alkalyn creatine and also take some BCAA's along with Animal Pak for my multi-vitamin fix. I am hypo-thyroid so I don't take any kind of fat burners/thermogenics because of the interference it would cause with the prescribed thyroid medication I take.

I have decided it was time for me to do something- Well I am walking twice a day-1 1/2 miles in the morning and then again in the evening. It was time for me to start doing something and have been doing this now for the last 4 weeks. My knees can not take any pounding so walking is all I am doing now. Need to get rid of the excess then maybe the knees can start taking the pounding.

Congrats, djb. You'll feel a lot better when we're walking to Memorial Stadium after we've been eating and drinking for 2 hours.

Holy crap that's a lot of stuff that is being ingested rather than naturally being produced. A couple of years ago I was approaching 280lbs and decided to do something about it. Taking only multi-vitamins, calcium and fish oil, I got down to 215. It was all about diet (balancing carbs and proteins and reducing sugars and fats to nearly nothing) and cardio.

Once I got there, I got big time into weights. I've doubled what I can lift in just about every exercise and have put on quite a bit of muscle since. Still only taking the above, no supplements. Cardio for 45 a day and then 30 minutes with weights each 5 times per week.

I have one protein shake in the morning.

Two things I gave up on long, long ago: protein shakes and lifting weights. The protein shake got only one try and I almost vomited. I lifted weights (not seriously) from high school up to my first year in law school until I realized it was boring as all hell. Now I do only bodyweight strength exercises with an occasional olympic lift thrown in if I get to the gym. And my only supplement is beer.

You should try them again, they've gotten a lot better. Companies like Muscle Milk & Myoplex are making drinks that actually taste good at this point.

I'm no doctor but I've read up on this stuff enough and have consulted with my doctor and he said everything Im taking is fine. He strongly goes against any type of fatburners just because of the strain it puts on your heart.

I have a pretty strict diet as well and drink nothing but water during the week (beer on the weekends). I've researched this enough to where I believe I'm not doing harm to my body. I do try to lay off the creatine so that's why I cycle on and off. I strongly suggest a pre workout drink. I think if I could only choose one of the supplements that I take, it would be some type of preworkout drink. Those things have taken my workouts to a whole new level and allow me to work out for about 1.5 to 2 hours at a time.

I also have no interest in getting that much protein. I'm not trying to gain weight.
