Not half as excited as Garrido, who cracked, “It took us 15 minutes to figure out how to score Marlow’s hit (in the scorebook). We finally saw there is a home run column.”

We've gotten NLI's certified for Holden Helmink (RHP), Travis Duke (LHP), Tyler Gonzales (RHP)... Three new pitchers for the Longhorns.

Interesting to note is that they have Gonzales listed as a RHP-he is also a very good SS.

Outfielder Courtney Hawkins also hails from Corpus Christi, attending Carroll High School. Three of the five pitchers are right-handers, including Tyler Gonzales from San Antonio Madison High School, Holden Helmink from Conroe Willis High School and Chad Hollingsworth from Waco Robinson High School. The two southpaws are Ty Culbreth from Bryan High School and Travis Duke from Pearland Dawson High School.
The Longhorns are expected to finalize the paperwork on more recruits before the early signing period ends on Nov. 16.

• Unanimous pick as District 10-4A Defensive MVP in 2011
• One of three high school players and the only junior to be selected to participate in the 2011 Frisco Celebrity Home Run Derby
Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Steve is a left-handed hitting catcher. He is going to be a big framed young man. He is going to be 6-2, 215 by the time he gets through growing. He hits the ball the other way well. He has power, strong arm, and a great future as a catcher.
Ty Culbreth – LHP – Bryan, Texas (Bryan HS)

• 2009 All-District 24-4A Second Team Pitcher
Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Travis is a left-handed pitcher that has shown upper 80s to low 90s, which from a 16- or 17-year old is pretty special. He has a good breaking ball, but he needs to work on his command on that. He is an advanced young man as well.
Tyler Gonzales – RHP – San Antonio (Madison HS)
• Currently ranked No. 98 in the nation among high school juniors by Perfect Game USA
• Pitched and played shortstop in the San Antonio High School All-Star Game in 2011

Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Tyler has a powerful arm with a strong breaking ball. He is low-to-mid 90s with a 78-80 mph breaking ball. He is going to throw harder because he is going to get bigger.
Courtney Hawkins – OF – Corpus Christi, Texas (Carroll HS)
• Currently ranked No. 5 in the nation among high school juniors by Perfect Game USA
• Led Carroll in every offensive category in 2011, including 15 home runs, .410 batting average, .940 slugging percentage, 42 runs and 22 stolen bases

Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Courtney had been a two-way player for most of his career at Corpus Christi Carroll, but this summer he turned into one of the premier hitters in the nation. He is more of an outfielder now. He has a large frame, 6-3, 205. He runs well and has exceptional power. He is one of the better high school players in the nation.
Holden Helmink – RHP – Conroe, Texas (Willis HS)
• Currently ranked No. 156 in the nation among high school juniors by Perfect Game USA
• Led Willis to the Region 3-4A quarterfinals as a junior
• Batted .529 with nine home runs as a junior
• 2011 District 18-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player

Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Chad is a big, strong right-hander with a hard sinker, and he gets a lot of ground balls with a 92 mph sinker.

Wyatt Mathisen – C – Corpus Christi, Texas (Calallen HS)
• Currently ranked No. 60 in the nation among high school juniors by Perfect Game USA
• 2011 Texas Sports Writers Association First Team All-Class 4A Shortstop
• 2011 District 31-4A MVP and All-District 31-4A First Team as a shortstop
• 2011 Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Class 4A Shortstop
• 2011 UIL Class 4A All-Tournament Team
• 2011 Texas Rangers Area Code Team
• Hit .454 with 57 RBI as a junior in 2011
• Hit .462 with 49 RBI as a sophomore and went 7-2 with a 1.42 on the mound as a sophomore in 2010
Quote from recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Tommy Harmon: Wyatt is a young man who has played and caught in the summer, and at his high school team in Calallan he has played at third and short. He is primarily a catcher, but his athleticism and his tools in baseball allow him to be a valuable player in the infield if needed. It is very unusual for someone to be very adept at playing short and catcher but he is. He has extra power from the right side, he has a strong throwing arm. He is a guy that we think has a very good future as a catcher.

Hard to say right now. This is a very tight group.

If we all go there, with the recruiting class we have in 2012, I'm predicting we'll have at least two national championships by the time we're done."

Very interesting development. Matt Moynihan signed last Spring but was not able to get in. Well now he signed and will be here this spring.

Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Baseball program received National Letters of Intent three of the top high school student-athletes along with the paperwork for two junior college players, head coach Augie Garrido announced on Friday.
The high school signees include infielders Austin Dean (Klein Collins HS) and Spencer Edwards (Rockwall HS) and outfielder Ben Johnson (Austin Westwood HS). The junior college additions include infielder Madison Carter (Grayson County JC) and outfielder Matt Moynihan (Orange Coast College).
The group includes three infielders and two outfielders. Through three days of the early signing period, the Longhorns have added two catchers, four infielders, three outfielders and five pitchers. Moynihan and infielder C.J. Hinojosa will join the team for the 2012 season.
"This is a balanced group between our pitchers and position players," associate head coach Tommy Harmon said. "Our position players are a very special group of athletes because they are all fast, they all have strong arms, and they are all competitors. They play with their motor running full-blast all of the time. They are going to be fun to watch and fun to watch grow up. The pitchers maybe are not as hard of throwers as some classes have been here recently, but they are a very competitive group, and most of them have a very good breaking ball."
The Longhorns have until Nov. 16 to finalize paperwork on recruits for the early signing periods.
2011-12 University of Texas Baseball signing class (as of Nov. 11, 2011)
Steve Bean – C – Rockwall, Texas (Rockwall HS)
Madison Carter – IF – Sherman, Texas (Grayson College)

He fits in the mold with the rest of these guys, with a plus throwing arm and plus speed. He has thrown for 1,000 yards and ran for 1,000 yards in football this year, so that tells you what kind of athlete he is. He is a great competitor and he has a very good future in baseball.

2013-14 commitments. Both verbal.

Tres Barrera - Sharyland

Quote:
MISSION - Tres Barrera has his focus on Sharyland Rattlers football right now, but knows his college future is in baseball--as he made a verbal commitment to the Texas Longhorns.
Barrera made his decision after a visit to the 40-Acres this past weekend. He's a junior at Sharyland right now, so he can't sign an official letter of intent until the spring of 2012. Verbal commitments are non-binding until an student-athlete signs an official letter of intent.

Blake Goins - Pearland

Quote:
2013 RHP Blake Goins committed to the Longhorns. Goins is a talented 6-foot-0, 190 pounder, from Pearland, Texas (HS). He's considered one of the top 1,000 prospects to watch on the national stage, and topped out at 89 mph this past summer. Goins competed with the Texas Scout Team Yankees at the WWBA World Championship.

Another 2013-14 commitment and I think has been posted before. Just add it here...

Andy McGuire - Madison, Va.

Quote:
Although he has not even finished his sophomore season yet, Madison shortstop Andy McGuire decided to wrap-up his college recruitment early by giving the University of Texas a verbal commitment late last week.

Another 2013-14 commitment

Trey Ball - New Castle, Indiana

Quote:
Junior Trey Ball has played baseball all over the map the last two off-seasons so he didn't mind making a commitment far from home to play at the next level. "My top three schools included North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas but when it came down to making a decision, my heart led me to Texas," Trey said. "Since I was a little kid I dreamed about being a Longhorn." The Texas coaching staff has told Trey he has the opportunity to pitch, hit and play outfield for them. That leaves the options wide open for him to prove himself at the next level.

Coach Brad King was thrilled for Trey and noted that Trey's signing is "great exposure for the entire New Castle baseball program.' Coach King went on to say that "Trey might be one of the best baseball players ever to play at New Castle." There is no doubt that Trey can be a two-way player at the next level." King went on to say that "making the decision early allows Trey to focus on details that will make him even a better player."

Trey is a two-time All-North Central Conference player. He has a 1.33 career era. His pitching stats also include 89 strike outs in 68 innings during his freshmen and sophomore seasons. At the plate he is a .361 hitter.

Not half as excited as Garrido, who cracked, “It took us 15 minutes to figure out how to score Marlow’s hit (in the scorebook). We finally saw there is a home run column.”

This class is turning out to be a monster one, but we don't know how many will make it to campus

Some Twitter comments from Kendall Rodgers about the 2012 recruiting class.

Quote:
Spoke to #Texas recruiting coordinator Tommy Harmon. Said he likes #Longhorns class, signed pitchers who can start immediately. #Horns #UT

Said while the #Horns pitching class isn't loaded with flamethrowers, it's a group with upside and that throws strikes. #UT #Texas #Big12

Harmon really likes C Wyatt Mathisen and 1B Austin Dean. Said Mathisen is very versatile, while Dean has power/good defender. #Horns #UT

Harmon said no doubt C.J. Hinojosa will eventually be a middle of the order hitter. But would've been right away? Who knows. #Horns #UT

#Texas finished the early signing period with 14 signees. Harmon would be pleased if #UT got 9 or 10 of them on campus. #Horns #Big12

Couple of #Texas team notes: SS Christian Summers physically gifted, but just needs to get comfortable. FR 2B Brooks Marlow a stud. #Horns
He also has a nice write-up about the #5 recruiting class (#1 in Big 12).

Texas has 6 of the top 10;

Quote:
Texas, much like California and Florida, traditionally produces big-time baseball prospects for both the college and pro ranks. Top prospects such as Sherman (Texas) right-hander Kyle Crick (No. 49 overall in 2011), The Woodlands (Texas) right-hander Jameson Taillon (No. 2 overall in 2010), McKinney (Texas) right-hander Zach Lee (No. 28 overall in 2010) and Brownwood (Texas) right-hander Shelby Miller (No. 19 overall in 2009) highlight the recent top talent from the state.
