You can have my budweiser when you pry it out of my coffin. Yes I love a good beer as much as the next guy, but on a hot day a Bud is all I crave!

Glad you distinguished between the two.

Texas Pride - a serious misnomer - is another cheap beer we drank in HS along with Old Milwaukee. Lone Star hadn't gotten popular yet so it was considered swill along with Pearl. Then in the late 70's early 80's it was the beer, I guess due to the Urban Idiot err Cowboy craze.

I really don't drink much beer but will have the occasional Shiner Bock or Hefeweissen.

Texas Pride was made by Pearl Brewing.

No, in point of fact, it was Willie, Waylon, Kris Kristofferson and the rest of the Armadillo World Headquarters crowd who ushered Lone Star into widespread popularity, especially among young people.

The most recent issue of Texas Monthly features a fascinating article that tracks the rise of the so-called Cosmic Cowboy movement and how it changed country music forever, especially here in Texas. One of the interesting sidenotes in the article is about how Lone Star became the beer of choice among that crowd (thanks to some sly marketing by Willie and the Lone Star reps).

Thanks, SA. I tried to link the article myself, but something was bogging down my connection to the TM server.

I'm going to link it on the Entertainment board, too, because it's such a good article.

Great article. Good friend of mine wrote it. Makes me think I got to Austin 20 years too late.

Tremendous article. Thanks for bringing it up, PFD, and thanks for linking it, SA.

Startling to see a clean-shaven Willie. And I didn't know that Marcia Ball's Austin roots went back so far.

To try to get the thread back on track after that interesting detour . . . another think I learned from that article was the connection between Lone Star and the whole outlaw country thing. Didn't realize there was such an identity between the two.

That revelation is what got the thread off track in the first place.

True, but I was at least trying to get the discussion back to beers instead of solely about musicians. Baby steps, ya know . . .

I also said I'd try to get the discussion back on track. Never said I would succeed.

Has anybody tried any of the St. Arnold beers brewed in Houston?

I tried the Spring Bock last weekend. It was okay, good, but not great. People rave about the Fancy Lawnmower, but I haven't tried it yet. Thoughts?

The Lawnmower beer is good. I highly recommend it after mowing the lawn...seriously!

Well I just spent the afternoon reading that. Great article, I started UT in '73 so got to spend a lot of time at the 'dillo. My gf's roomate worked in the communications building and could get us passes to ACL, lot of fun in those days but by the time I left in '78 the disco scene was cranking up and the atmosphere was alot different. We would hit Texas Opry House in Houston afterwards but it eventually cratered as well.
