We started pre-dawn at 5:00 AM on the 6th, which was the first day of the battle. We went...all...day...long! We walked through thick woods, crossed numerous creeks (splash ), ran into several briar patches, and had one of the best times of my life!
That night we also enjoyed a free concert of Civil War era music by Bobby Horton, who does many of the tunes in the Ken Burns PBS films. Just a SUPER SUPER day!

Fascinating how much your imagination takes over while staring at fields or mounds of dirt. I could spend all day walking the grounds and reading everything which also constitutes one of the 9 rings of hell for the wife.

I may end up going to Kuala Lumpur for work for a couple weeks later this year. Not sure about that though.

Shiloh is one of my favorite Civil War battle sites because, due to its remote location, it has remained relatively undeveloped and untouched in the 150 years since the battle. It really brings the battle home when you can actually see, e.g., the Hornet's Nest, Bloody Pond, Pittsburg Landing, etc.
For those of you who are Civil War buffs, I would highly recommend a book that I picked up at Shiloh called Field of Honor by Edwin C. Bearss, a former historian for the U.S. Parks Service who recounts the battles from the unique perspective of having walked the battlefields as a tour guide.

We're planning to spend a week this summer at my in-laws' rustic little place in Conejos County, Colorado. Nothing to do but fly-fish, hike, read, and relax in some beautiful country. Oh, and no cell service. Awesome.

Is it proper etiquette to give the she-male a reach around? I'm only asking for...uh...research purposes.

Didn't your mother teach you it's bad manners to talk with your mouth full?

Forgot to recommend a book to you that I just read, PFD. Republic of Suffering by Drew Faust. About how the civil war's effects on people's idea of death and meaning. It's a little repetitive, but for someone who's really into the subject you'd probably find it worth reading.

Augusta and PFD -- Have you read "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz? It has a chapter discussing his visit to Shiloh and his encounters with other visitors who were retracing the steps their ancestors took when they fought in the battle. It's an interesting book.
