As the calendar flips to October and district play starts, several Texas commits are getting the chance to rest up with an open date in week five. Chris Jones, Darius Terrell, Adrian White, Ashton Dorsey, Trey Hopkins (and his teammate, Texas target DeAndrew White) and Carrington Byndom are all off. That being said, there are still plenty of good ball games this weekend involving Texas commits including yet another big one in East Texas involving Texas defensive back pledge Bryant Jackson.
Thanks in part to Bryant Jackson’s play in all three phases of the game (he also plays receiver and returns kickoffs and punts) Sulphur Springs has not skipped a beat this season racing out to a perfect 5-0 record. But the Wildcats, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 4A AP poll, face their toughest test to date as they will hit the road to take on No. 6 Longview. The Lobos already have a win over Class 5A power Allen and their only loss was to Class 5A rival Lufkin two weeks ago.
The action for the Longhorn commits gets started Thursday night with Garland taking on district rival Lakeview Centennial. Tevin Jackson has been coming on as of late to lead a Garland defense that has been very good thus far in 2009 while Adrian Phillips has a had a few very good offensive games this season and after being slowed last week he seems primed for a big night tonight.
Taylor Bible has been a big reason why Denton Guyer is the No.2 ranked team in Class 4A as the Wildcat defense has been outstanding this season. Guyer will look to continue its winning ways on the road against a Wichita Falls Rider team that is battle tested and has faced the likes of Sulphur Springs, Denton Ryan, John Tyler and Cedar Hill this season.
Speaking of the Cedar Hill Longhorns, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A is back in action this week after taking an open date in week four as they will be on the road to take on South Grand Prairie. Linebacker commit Aaron Benson has helped a stout Cedar Hill defense this season as the Longhorns, who have been ranked No. 1 since the third week of the season, have their collective eyes set on winning the school’s second state championship under head coach Joey McGuire.
After a four-sack game last week Haltom defensive end Reggie Wilson, the No. 1 overall prospect on the Inside Texas 2010 Top 100, will look to cause havoc again this week but the job will get tougher as Haltom hosts Burleson. Burleson was undefeated until last week when it lost a tough game at home to a very good Abilene ball club.
Cedar Park got off to a rocking start in District 16-5A play by blowing out Georgetown on the road in the district opener last week thanks in large part to Dominic Espinosa and an offensive line that paved the way for more than 400 yards rushing. The Timberwolves get Round Rock McNeil this week and even though the Mavericks have struggled this season these two teams know each other well and nothing is a given in this highly competitive district.
Traylon Shead’s quest to catch Ken Hall as the state’s all time rushing leader has likely already ended as Shead as lost one game due to weather and only rushed for just over 120 yards total the last two games because of an ankle injury. Cayuga however continues to roll right along and Shead and the Wildcats will look for another victory this week when they face Overton at home.
