Junior Days have paid off big time for Texas A&M and Oklahoma the last two weeks, but Texas may have outdone both of them Sunday. The Longhorn commitment total moved to 10 today when Dallas St. Mark’s Emmanuel Acho gave his verbal pledge to Mack Brown and company.
"I committed earlier today," Emmanuel Acho said. "I talked to Coach Brown. We were both pretty excited about the whole thing."
Texas was the first school to offer Acho a scholarship, but several others had been recruiting him pretty hard. He chose Texas over the likes of Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Ole Miss and SMU.
"I knew their coaching staff best," Acho said about Texas. "They have the nicest facilities of anyone. They also have a great academic program. You can’t go wrong with UT. It was also close to home."
Emmanuel’s brother, Sam Acho, flew under the radar for most of the early portion of the recruiting process in the class of 2007. When Sam’s game film surfaced, he became one of the most sought after prospects in the Lone Star State and eventually signed with Texas. Emmanuel Acho was excited about receiving the opportunity to continue playing football with his big brother.
"I think it did play a factor," Emmanuel Acho said about his decision to follow his brother to UT. "I am excited to be able to play with him a couple of more years down in Austin."
Emmanuel Acho had already visited the UT campus numerous times on trips with Sam. He was already very familiar with the coaching staff and facilities at Texas. He got to experience a wide range of activities during his junior day visit.
"It went really well," Acho said. "First, we met with the coaches. Then we split up into groups and got to talk to our position coaches. I got a feel for the philosophies that Texas uses. Then we met with the academic counselors for about an hour. They gave us an overview of the academic program for recruits. Then we went to the weight room and met the strengthening coach. He told us how hard we were going to have to work. Then we ate lunch. Coach Brown walked around and introduced himself. I had to leave early. At this point, it was about 3:10. Before we left, I had a quick meeting with Coach Brown and he offered at that point."
